Really newbie questions.
See that button up top "Search" - it's magical !

Not too many people on here with Vortech, fwiw.
Vortech = belt spun turbocharger, the worst of both worlds , my opinion only.

I second your opinion on a Vortech blower Steven.

Thumbs up

There is no comparisson at all. The power curves tell the whole story. a JRSC has a nice fat HP curve that makes good HP right from idle and lots of area under the torque curve. The Vortech curve looks like an alpine ski slope.

Since the vortech is a centrifical compressor it has to be spinning pretty fast before it makes any boost at all while the Eaton compressor moves a given ammount of air for every revolution (positive displacement) I think someone on this board put it best when they said "The Vortech has all of the negatives of a turbo combined with all of the negatives of a JRSC"

It sure looks cool under the hood but I would never use one on a small displacement engine.

Guess I will get the JRSC then if I get this GSR that I am looking at. Where is the best and cheapest place to get one. Also how much are they anyways. Also how long does it take to install ??

I don't know. I might have to disagree somewhat. The site admin guy from Club si finally had some pretty good track results with his vortech.

He also seems to like it as a daily driver.

Compare his time of a *b16* in a civic to the recent crvtec times or b18 in a hatch with jrsc's.

thread here.

My question is: would it be a little easier on the engine because of a linear application (albeit alpine) of power rather than your average turbo?

Damn. . .that IS fast.

But for daily driveability, I'm putting my vote in for a JRSC. People who own a Vortech say that they're cars are just as driveable, but looking at the power figures proves that all their power is "up top," while JRSC cars have a nice flat torque curve in any rpm. Vortech owners also say that if they need the power, they can just downshift. . . well, who wants to downshift all the time when you can just step on the gas and GOOOO!

No, a JRSC isn't a turbo, and as such we don't have intercoolers or crazy timeslips. . . but then again, if we wanted a turbo, we would have purchased one. Personally, I got a JRSC because I didn't know that many people who owned one. Also, it's probably as stealth as you can get, which is always nice when you jump on an unsuspecting M3 or such. yea that is fast...but i have heard of people w JRSC boosting around 10 psi makin anywhere from 230-240 whp...(270-280 crank)...running consistent 12.80s on slicks. Vortech ur boostin 13 psi (more strain), and getting a whopping 330 hp (not srue wheel or fly), but only managing a 12.85? don't get me wrong it is fast, but for that power and how much boost ur running it's not too great.

There is a TypeR here in my area that has modified the si vortech kit to fit his car. He is running 12psi. and is hondata tuned. The best time he has ever gotten out of his car is a 13.6 @ 106mph.

I am running half the boost.. 6psi baseline kit. No fuel management what so ever. My best time has been a 13.7 @ 104mph.

Give me 2 more psi and some fuel management(hondata) and our JRSCed cars will flat out walk on a vortech kit. Not only that, but he has had several problems with the setup and has in different time frames been out of a car for months. My car has never been down when it comes to the JRSC except the One and a half day it took to put it on.

Well, not to take anything away from the guy... I think that a 12.85 is fast. However, Tim (BoostedEX) ran a 8.20 @ 87 mph a week or so ago... which is faster !!!

Details: 245 wheel HP, 7.5 psi boost, CRVTEC with rods and pistons, NO intercooler.

He ran similiar 60' times, which means similiar "spinning" of those 22" slicks...

True, the car is probably 200 pounds lighter than a '99 Civic Si... but he has 85 LESS wheel HP.

The power under the curve is still what matters... so in this case, I guess it all comes down to what is most important: Winning a race or having the biggest dyno graph.
